YOUTH PROGRAMMATIC THINKING | GRADES 6–12
Python Coding Classes
for Kids & Teens
Students in grades 6–12 learn Python programming through hands-on coding classes at Saint Paul College in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
WHAT IS PYTHON?
Learn to Code.
Learn to Solve Problems.
Python is a programming language used to create software, automate tasks, analyze information, and develop technology solutions. Its readable structure makes it a useful language for students beginning to learn text-based programming.
Unlike Scratch, which uses visual coding blocks, Python introduces students to writing instructions using actual programming syntax. Students learn how to organize their code, test their ideas, identify errors, and make improvements as they develop working programs.
WRITE
Write Real Python Code
Students learn programming syntax, commands, variables, and how to write instructions that a computer can execute.
THINK
Develop Computational Thinking
Students use logic, sequencing, conditions, and repetition to break problems into smaller steps and design solutions.
TEST
Debug and Improve Programs
Students learn to recognize errors, test their code, interpret results, and make changes when a program does not work as expected.
BUILD
Create Working Projects
Students apply what they learn through programming exercises and projects that help connect coding concepts with practical applications.
WHAT STUDENTS LEARN
The Foundations of Text-Based Programming
Through hands-on exercises, students begin understanding the concepts programmers use to write, organize, and troubleshoot code.
MORE THAN LEARNING A LANGUAGE
From understanding instructions to creating solutions.
Learning Python helps students understand how technology responds to instructions and how programming can be used to solve problems. These foundational skills can support future learning in software development, data science, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and other technology fields.
YOUTH PROGRAMMATIC THINKING
Learn Python. Build a Foundation.
BDPA Twin Cities introduces students in grades 6–12 to the fundamentals of Python programming through eight weeks of hands-on learning. Students begin writing code, practicing logical thinking, and developing foundational problem-solving skills they can continue building over time.
Learn from Technology Professionals
Students receive introductory coding instruction from technology professionals who help them understand programming concepts and work through hands-on exercises.
Learn at Saint Paul College
Students attend in-person Saturday coding classes at Saint Paul College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, gaining experience learning in a college environment.
Build Foundational Coding Skills
Through beginner-level programming activities, students practice writing instructions, using logic, identifying errors, and developing simple programs.
ACCESSIBLE TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION
No Cost to Participating Families.
BDPA Twin Cities provides introductory coding education without charging participating families tuition. Students must submit an application for consideration.
WHERE PYTHON CAN TAKE YOU
Learn the Fundamentals. Discover What's Possible.
Python is used in many areas of technology. During this eight-week introductory class, students begin learning how programming works and how code can be used to solve problems. These foundational skills can support future learning in software development and data science.
THE BDPA STUDENT LEARNING PATHWAY
Eight Weeks Is Just the Beginning.
Python Coding is part of BDPA Twin Cities' Youth Programmatic Thinking program. Students develop introductory programming skills that can support continued learning through future coding sessions and the High School Technology Program.
